Description

Dr. Ali Noorzad is a civil engineer by initial training, having graduated at Iran University of Science and Technology (GPA-3.5/4) and subsequently completing a Master degree in Civil Engineering at the same university (GPA-3.90/4). He earned his doctorate in Geotechnical Engineering from Concordia University, Montreal, Canada in 1998. He is a geotechnical engineer with broad experience on numerous projects in Iran. With over 27 years of experience, he has held several leadership positions ranging from Soil Mechanics Laboratory Head to the Director General of Water Resources Management Organization of Ministry of Energy, the Chairman of the Executive Board of Iranian National Committee on Large Dams (IRCOLD) and President of Iranian Geotechnical Society (IGS). He was the Project Director of South Pars-Phases 19, 20 and 21 of Pars Oil and Gas Company (POGC) which is affiliated to the Ministry of Petroleum and also at the same time he was a member and Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sabir Company which was established more than 60 years ago. Dr. Noorzad was also the Chairman of the Faculty of Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering of Shahid Beheshti University (SBU). He also acted as the Deputy Minister and Managing Director of Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company (CDTIC) which is affiliated to the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development (MRUD) for three years. Dr Noorzad is now the Vice President of International Commission on Large Dams (ICOLD) and at the same time, is the Chairman of Asian Pacific Club (APG) of ICOLD. Furthermore, he is presently the Dean of Faculty of Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering of Shahid Beheshti University. Dr. Noorzad was a member of the editorial board of International Journal of Lowland Technology, Japan and also was a council member of International Association of Lowland Technology (IALT), Japan. He is now a member of International Editorial Board of the International Journal on Hydropower and Dams. He is also a member of various scientific and professional organizations that are too lengthy to name. His professional career encompasses a wide range in Civil Engineering. His research interest in the areas of soil liquefaction, soil improvement, design of shallow and deep foundations, stability of slopes, detailed field investigation, laboratory testing specifications, and acting as a member of an expert panel to the Ministry of Energy in Iran, qualifies him to provide professional technical and managerial advice to geotechnical firms. Dr. Noorzad maintains a strong interest in geotechnical earthquake engineering. He is developing techniques for reliability based design and is utilizing risk management approaches in the safe design and construction of structures. He has started teaching and research works as a full time faculty member in the Faculty of Civil, Water and Environmental Engineering of Shahid Beheshti University (SBU), formerly Power and Water University of Technology (PWUT). He has also given courses at M.Sc. and Ph.D. levels in Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) as a part time instructor. In addition to be actively involved in undergraduate and graduate teaching, he has supervised more than 230 graduate students’ theses at various levels in different universities. Authoring and co-authoring more than 350 papers and 20 books on geotechnical problems, he continues to keep the soil mechanics abreast of new and innovative technical advances and concepts. He has also mastered a new concept and a special numerical technique, which is very powerful tool in dealing with certain class of geotechnical problems. He is a recognized expert in earthquake geotechnical engineering and a frequent presenter at national and international conferences and seminars. Dr. Noorzad has chaired a number of sessions of national and international conferences and symposia and has been invited to serve in international scientific committees of many conferences. He has progressed through geotechnical engineering to develop his skills in the dam engineering field, oil and gas storage tanks and pertinent facilities development and more recently in development of transportation infrastructures. He has provided expert technical advice on numerous projects, particularly with dam and road engineering.
